Here is another of the James McNeish field recordings full of good music and atmosphere. 
I think that some tracks on this record are very precious in deed. I like the big 
variation covering many different styles and traditions, only thing that is sad is 
that so many tracks are so short. That does not make the record less important it 
only makes you want to hear more. I think the Easter wailing track, the Pastorale 
and the Prayer song are wonderful glimpses allowing a real time travel. 
The Tarantellina with the jews harp and the Nennia is also very good listening.
Hope you enjoy this one! I will post another one of his recordings with music from 
Greece, but a little later. Too much other music waiting in line... We will see what 
comes first, and maybe someone else has some more of the McNeish recordings they could 
pass along to me so I could put them together with the others...

Resia Valley is a very small municipality-region lying in North Italy near the borders with Slovenia and Austria.
Resian people, who nowadays are numbered in about a thousand, have slavic origins and speak a very idiomatic
slavic dialect ("rozajanski"), strongly influenced by archaic lingual elements. Located between the two peninsulas
(the balkan and the italian), but in fact isolated due to its surrounded by mountains alpine position, Resia has,
in spite of its size, a rich folkloric history with unique customs and traditions.
"Smarnamisa!" compilation, an Avant Records release, is a rare document of traditional resian music created by
fiddle ("citara"), cello ("bunkula"), "percussive'' feet, vocals, narrations etc.
Perhaps attractive mainly to ones with traditional folk tastes or ethno-musicological interests, but valuable and
sympathetic as a voice of an unseen dot of the world can be.

It's a little odd that I get to hear a lot of music from the North of Italy and quite a lot from the South - yet very little 
from the central areas. Perhaps it's that the North and the South each have their own strong cultural (and political) 
identity, and so celebrate their own music more.
Musicanti del Piccolo Borgo are a group from central Italy, and have made the music of Lazio and Molise their particular 
area of interest - and study. The group was formed in the mid-'70s and has done a good deal of collecting work, as well 
as performing, in the ensuing 30 years. As well as learning the songs and music they found, they have also 
learned to play the instruments native to the area so, as well as the usual 'folk' instruments, we hear the piffero,
zampogna, chitarra battente and bufù (the big friction drum of Molise).
There's a wide range of styles to be heard on this CD - from lullabies to stornelli and ballads; from several tarantelle 
to a 3:4 saltarella, a quadrille, and the Danza In Minore, which sounds medieval. Unfortunately I can't tell you too much
about the individual tracks because the otherwise excellent Notes reveal nothing whatever about the songs and tunes!
And since many of the songs appear to be in dialect anyway, I can't even apply my rudimentary Italian to their translation.
Without actually saying so, it appears that this CD is a compilation of tracks from five earlier records made from 
1994 to 2003 - so it's a 'best of' release and, as the website indicates - in Italian - it's in homage to their 30 years 
of music. Very nice it all is, too. Everything is well played and sung - no gimmicks or flash - and there's really not 
a single track which I don't enjoy. That said, the one I like most is Jesce Sole.

These are songs from Tuscanian folkore and/or themes from "Risorgimento" (the historical period when Italia was united/created/founded, around 1861) and this set is somehow part of Radio3 celebrations for the 150 years of Italy - every track should need an extensive explanation, their name is pronounced "Tusce gentes" as in Latin (it kinda means People From Tuscany). Note that the interviews and introductions (about the history of these songs, and about the artist themselves, totalling kinda 24 mins - so only 30' of music are left) are in ITALIAN, maybe useless downloading them if you don't understand it, hence songs and speeches are in separate archives

Bon Nadal Occitania, is a collection of compositions from the tradition conceived to commemorate Christmas. This is the unusual soundtrack for the upcoming Festivities recommended by BREGADA BERARD, the collective alter ego of Sergio BERARDO, charismatic leader of Lou Dalfin and reputed representative of the Occitany music and culture.
If it might sound an unusual BERARDO what comes out of the first notes of this recording, considered his commitment in organising and discovering of traditional Occitany tune, we do not have to forget that this artist from the Cuneo Valleys has always been, from the start, a severe and passionate researcher of the patrimony of his lands, of which he successfully recomposed the music repertoire for hurdy-gurdy.

Chants and melodies presented by BREGADA BERARD show us their artistic depth and proves how cantar Nadal or cantar nové used to be deeply rooted in their people’s life.

Following the astonishing U Ciucciu (fy 8090) in 2005 and Ricuordi (fy 8113) in 2006, here is the latest original release by MASSIMO FERRANTE. With Jamu, his commitment in researching the musical and social reality in Souther Italy is renewed. His unmistakable style and his unquestionable unique 12 strings guitar sound, mark this recording characterized by bold matchings. The first and last tracks stem out from the celebrated poem (divided in two sections) by Ingnazio Buttitta, Lingua e Dialettu, transformed in song thanks to the arrangement and the generous music interventions by Antonello Paliotti (classic guitar, bandoneon, mandolin, bass). The cue is given by the infamous lyrics (Un popolo / mettetelo in catene / spogliatelo / tappategli la bocca, / è ancora libero) (People, even if in chains, naked, silenced are still free), not less tough is the following verse (Un popolo / diventa povero e servo / quando gli rubano la lingua / ricevuta dai padri: / è perso per sempre)(People become poor and slave when the language given by its fathers is stolen: then is lost forever). Always by Buttitta are the lyrics of Lamentu pi la morti di Turiddu Carnivali, dedicated to the trade union leader killed by the Sicilian mafia in 1955, that FERRANTE interprets with the Catania guitar. An important recovering is Strina du judeo, a traditional chant of Calabria, here proposed with beautiful variations by Ferrante with Lutte Berg at the electric guitar, Lello Perarca bass and Enrico Del Gaudio drums. Strine are the traditional Christmas Carols, but this one is marked by caustically raging tones against civil and religious institutions. Ari cincu on the other hand is a joggese chant in a brass band style, in which Francesco Banchini clarinet performs. We carry on with the bitter and ironic Ha detto De Gasperi a tutti i divoti, interpreted by Ferrante in Black and white, following the ballad singer fashion, and with Tu compagno, originally by Canzoniere delle Lame, that Ferrante dedicates to all nowadays left winged politicians and to which Lutte Berg wittingly adds some sound “effects”. Again the Swedish born guitarist with Calabria born father is responsible for the crafty jazzy ‘U monacu. A solid Tarantella cannot be missed (Tarantella Minore), FERRANTE doesn’t leave out the Occitane minorities from Guardia Piemontese, in the Cosenza province, presenting here a surreal song in Lingue D’Oc (La piov e la fa soulelh)

Lou Tapage (which in the medieval French dialect Langue d’Oc means "the uproar") was born in 1999 with the meeting of seven talented musicians from Saluzzo in northwestern Italy. Their different styles combined to create a sound so unique that a new term has been created to describe their genre: Nu Folk. It is a personal and eclectic sound, deep-rooted but always on the go. A strong but intangible leitmotiv, always present, is the energy of the band itself. At its core, Lou Tapage is in fact an energetic exploration, without preconceptions, into what music is and what it might convey... .. After researching the ancient Langue d'Oc, they decided to compose lyrics in the Catalan, Provençal and Occitan dialects, sometimes mixed with elements of French, Italian and Spanish (Castilian), along with traditional melodies... .. Apolid composer and singer he studied at Oriental University of Naples
Tout-court artist he makes a live-sound-track of Murnau's Nosferatu and collaborations with Daniele Sepe, Bebo Storti , Le Theatre de la Ville de Paris…
In 1999 Balestrieri founds "Les travailleurs de la Nuit" (not organized band variabile in humors and elements), writes and records "Anachronistic Dream of a Disadapted of the century XXI" a concept-album tribute to Alexander Marius Jacob, gentleman and sarcastic thief wich inspired Le Blanc for Arsenio Lupin.
In the years 2000 and 2005 Balestrieri is invited to Premio Tenco and he plays in session with Stefano Bollani, Ellade Bandini, Mauro Pagani, Francesco Guccini and others 
He wins International Pelago Festival Buskers '96-Risonanze 2004- Mantova Musica Festival 2006- Sciamano Showman festival 2006.
The first album "I nasi buffi e la scittura musicale" is considered the Second First Opera of 2007 and Balestrieri is invited for the third time to Premio Tenco. 
In "Venice Carnival 2008" he presents le disc In Theathre Fondamenta Nuove and after in february on Sky TV. 
Between July and August always in the same theatre, he records and presents with Arif Azerturk Ensemble of Istanbul " A Neapolitan Turk in Venice" , spectacle on the Neapolitan song revisited in middle-orient style, with musicians and instruments of Asia Minor.
In "Venice Carnival 09" "A la Folie" he presents le "Repertoire Megaphoniste"
In july '09 pubblished the cd: " A Neapolitan Turk in Venice" and record "Who is Boris Vian" In the same period records with Moshen Namjoo in his new album "Oy".With the same artist plays in Venice Cinema Festival....... In septeber "A Neapolitan Turk in Venice" is considered Second Album Cover of the year '09
In november and december '09 Gerardo Balestrieri joins Fishtank Ensemble in California: Live-tour and a new Album recorded in Los Angeles.
The recording from " Songs at crossroads (al crocicchio)” had already began in Venice, a second disc of original and unpublished songs...In february he plays in Carnaval of Venice 2010. “Napoletana” is an artistic project sprung forth from the enormous desire to bring back the old Neapolitan lyricism, its purest and most poetic expression, always guarding itself against the risk of being set aside and catching dust or finding to have been overshadowed by a deceiving and stereotyped folkloristic postcard, which is the image that has always been portrayed all over the world: a city, Napoli, where “appearing” means more than “being”. A research-project that reconnects, with simplicity, to the sources of sounds, made of work-songs and villanelle, but, at the same time, of songs that are totally unedited, etched in the cement of the city, with eyes fixed on the past and a heart that breathes in the scent of the future.
A new music born from an old art, unique and overflowing with feeling, sought-after and innovative in the language.
The Neapolitan minor scale (harmonic and melodic) is a spawn of the Greek tetrachord and it represents the starting point of this journey; then, under the concrete of Naples’ housing projects it discovers its ancient truths, the universal and eternal questions and answers to the misery and the suffering that each new day brings. The lyrics, raw but intense poems that are born in the street, recount all this.
The musical intermezzi with the sopranino saxophone and the small Neapolitan harp, coupled with the classic guitar, give life to a striking representation of a musical ambience that is, at once, new and old. On the trail of one the rarefied scales recuperated and reused by Avitabile, we find the “scala nova”, of popular origins, which dates back to the XIV century. It resumes the instrumental music in accord with the sung pieces.
Napoletana is the old that sounds new, the new that sounds old. Napoletana is a snapshot of Neaples, a city with historical sources that are at the heart of a culture that moves along, aware of its roots, and of its expressed and unexpressed capacity for cultural development, both national and international.

Tre Martelli (seminal northern Italian band) has been on the scene for almost 30 years now. They are also a valuable point of entry to the musical traditions of Piedmont, because, over the years, they have patiently reconstructed the folk music heritage of the geographical triangle between Monferrato hills, Langhe hills and Alessandrino plain, with extensions into the mountainous Canavese and Quattro Province areas, gathering together a huge repertoire of drinking and ritual songs, ballads, instrumentals and dance music including brando, monferrina, curenta, burea, scottish, mazurka, waltz, polka and many others.
The group's ethnomusicological research, conducted together the cultural association TRATA BIRATA, as well as being a model of scholarly precision, also stands as a heartfelt acknowledgement of those singers and musicians from whom they learned their material - and who they regularly visited as friends, shared concert stages with, and even included on their records.
The quality and accuracy of its field work, and the attention given to stylistic variations in the area, together with energy and creative maturity of the band’s performances, have engendered enthusiastic audience response and critical acclaim, both at home and abroad.
This has resulted in a huge increase in concerts, tours, performances in national TV’s and Radios (B.B.C., R.A.I., etc.), not only in Italy but also in the most part of Europe.
The band’s recorded output has been unanimously acclaimed by specialist international critics writing in the world’s foremost music publications.
It all began in Alessandria in the Spring of 1977 when three of the members of rock-jazz band Angostura, originally founded in 1974, (Lorenzo Boioli, Renzo Ceroni and Enzo Conti), decided to experiment with new acoustic sounds, interweaving ethnic influences with medieval and renaissance music.
And so to the existing Angostura mix, the trio added the flutes and recorders that Lorenzo had been collecting over the years as well as some ‘family’ instruments (the fiddle and melodeon that had belonged to Enzo's great-grandfather, and Renzo's father's mandolin) laying down the foundations of what would be the group's future sound. The first months of rehearsal resulted in a short concert where the group was asked to set to music a story written for Alessandria schoolchildren entitled La leggenda dei tre martelli (the legend of the three hammers) which was also to become the group's new name.
By one of those odd coincidences that some choose to call destiny, it was only some weeks later that the Tre Martelli project really took off, when Angostura had all their instruments and PA stolen, marking the end of the rock-jazz group and the coming together of its remaining members (percussionist Marco Goggi and guitarist-bassist Riccardo Maso) in the newly formed Tre Martelli.
In February 1978 Riccardo left the group. His replacement was ‘country’ guitarist, Claudio Gigli who was joined by the cellist Roberto Cavagnoli. Shortly afterwards recording began on a demo-tape, Danza di Luglio, featuring a number of tracks rooted in Piemontese folk music, which soon became the group's exclusive focus. Their repertoire was based mainly on the ethno musicological studies of the Tratad Birata Cultural Association which were starting around that time, and the group began to operate under the aegis of this association.
Thus began a long season of concerts which saw frequent changes to the group's line-up including the departure of Marco and Lorenzo, the latter hooking up with a young band called La Ciapa Rusa for the recording of their first ‘historic’ record. Joining Tre Martelli meanwhile were singer Bernadette Da Dalt from the Susa Valley, flautist and clarinettist Franco Pierino, and the young fiddler Andrea Sibilio.
It was this line-up which recorded the 1982 cassette Trata Birata. The band subsequently began touring abroad, leading to further line-up changes: out went Roberto and Franco and in came Gianni Ricci on hurdy-gurdy and flautist Paolo Lodici for the albums Giacu Trus (1985) and La Tempesta (1987). For these recordings the band were joined by other musicians who would become longtime collaborators, both as ethnomusicological consultants and as guests on records and on tour: multi- instrumentalist, singer and composer Domenico Torta; the great jazz accordionist Gianni Coscia who had fallen in love with folk music; and singer Vincenzo ‘Ciacio’ Marchelli who became a full-time member from 1988.
In 1989 Claudio left the group to go back to playing country music, while Lorenzo Boioli (fresh from his experience with La Ciapa Rusa) was lured back for good to the ranks of the Tre Martelli during a tour in the UK. It was thus in the form of an octet that the group went in to the studio to record the CD Brüzè Carvè, the first available from the Felmay.
Tre Martelli subsequently recorded another two basic CDs with slightly modified line-ups, Omi e Paiz (1995) and Car der Steili (2000) (see reviews extracts), and in 2002 the band celebrate the 25 years of traditional songs and dance tunes from Piedmont with the anthology Semper Viv: “This is a lovely album of excellent material, none of which (I think) has ever before appeared in CD format, played and sung by a really nice bunch of people whose warmth and enthusiasm jumps straight out of your speakers. Highly recommended.

Fratelli Mancuso ::: La stanza della musica

This is a challenging recording, both in its rough and ragged tone and in its mix of content. The bothers Lorenzo and Enzo Mancuso are from Sicily, but their music was sharpened by years as immigrants in England. Those years gave them exposure to many cultures from the Mediterranean, as well as a political viewpoint that subtly colors some of what you will hear on this recording. Using the devotional and folk music of Sicily as a starting point, the Mancusos merge their harsh vocal style with many varied instuments in a soundscape as arid and yet as beautiful as the island. This is almost entirely mournful music, leaning heavily on religious themes in this strange and sometimes bittersweet tribute to the power of the Virgin Mary. This is a deep, richly layered recording that requires effort and rewards you for it.
The brothers Mancuso have made a mark in Italy for their unique - sometimes lush, sometimes raw but always artful - interpretations of Sicilian folk music. All fans who enjoyed the previous album "Bella Maria" and their acting in "The Talented Mr. Ripley" an Anthony Minghella Hollywood movie, will be certainly pleased and surprised by the sophisticated beauty of this new album. The Mancuso Brothers crossed over apparently incompatible worlds in the last twenty years, trough the Sutera's ( their village) lost paths of their native Sicily to the remote suburbs of London. They learned the language of the rimembrance, like the castaway learns swimming, avoiding any distractions . They began singing professionally without actually realizing it and they are still doing it even when, left the London mists, they came back to Italy, following an ideal, essential song, crucial like a first need. After the success of "Bella Maria " the Mancuso Brothers have become cultural Icons of their native and beloved Sicily, performing in all major Theaters and Festivals, appearing in Radio and Television with their "virtuous unconsciousness", in Italy and abroad

His musical project which explores the Southern of Italy and the Mediterranean musical tradition involves his compositions and ballads. A wide range of both traditional and original songs, all is made to exalt the melodic inspiration and armonic richness of the Ambrogio Sparagna accordeon, as well as the acrobatic rhythmical force and passion of the tambourines, ciaramella (traditional oboe), and the beating guitar (a kind of guitar diffused in Southern Italy) of his musical friends. Ambrogio utilize Arts Comedy , with the Neapolitan Theatre masks which is a tradition of the music. And, with perfect timing, here's a new CD from Saydisc.  The Damian Webb tag alerts me to the possibility of songs by children - though the general presentation of this record did not prepare me for the fact that only 32 of the total 57 minutes playing time would be by adults.  Might the majority of potential purchasers feel slightly cheated?  One could argue that they shouldn't, particularly given the general high quality of the youngsters' performances (sound clip).  But they certainly should be by the quality of the booklet notes - also by Fr Webb - which manage to combine ignorance, irrelevant anecdote, misleading information and some personal observations which reveal a most unpleasantly patronising attitude...

The repertoire of Presente Remoto concert focuses on the new compositions from the album and proposes variegated evocative atmospheres roaming from italian world music to jazz, songwriter’s pieces and more classical sound.
For this project Tesi has formed a new line-up, a sextet composed by himself, two well-known members of Banditaliana – Claudio Carboni on sax and Maurizio Geri (guitar and vocals) – and the contribution of Marco Fadda on percussions, Stefano Melone (vocals and keyboards) and Damiano Puliti on cello.
In addition to the base sextet, some occasional guests are envisaged to take part in the concerts, such as the string quintet Archaea, florentine singer songwriter Ginevra di Marco, sardinian singer Elena Ledda, jazz clarinetist Gabriele Mirabassi and french mandolin player Patrick Vaillant.

The ethnic Greeks living in Salento (Puglia) and Calabria have their own distinct dialects (Griko and Grecanico, respectively). They have lived in the area for an undetermined amount of time, possibly as early as Ancient Greece or as late as the Middle Ages. The community has been largely assimilated by the Italian nation, but there remain speakers of the dialects and other aspects of the culture. There was a roots revival in the 1970s in this area, paralleling similar developments across continental Europe, including Brittany and Catalonia.
Encardia is the name of a Greek musical ensemble inspired by, creating and presenting melodies and songs from the rich musical tradition of Southern Italy . The group came together in 2004 and has performed for more than 180 live concerts in the regions of Greece , Italy , Southern France and Cyprus . They have cooperated with the most important representatives of the Southern Italian musical tradition for album recordings as well as in live performances (G. Avantiaggiato, R. Licci, C.Villani, E. Castagna , Ghetonia , mala lingua and others). They have also performed with well-known greek fellow artists such as A. Bakirtzis, N. Portokaloglou, F. Delivorias, K. Thomaides, V. Lekkas, C. Tsiamoulis, A. Ioannides, N. Xidakis, the symphonic orchestra of the municipality of Athens and others. The troubadours of encardia have released two albums (“Agapi mou Fidella” and "To paramithi tis tarantoulas"), both critically acclaimed. The unique connection they share with their audiences while in concert has often been notably mentioned by the media. There is also a third album (Kalos Irtate) which was the live recording of the cultural meeting “Greeks meet Greeks” during which Twenty three musicians and about ten dancers from Southern Italy and Greece took turns on stage and deposited the musical experiences of three different generations.

Possibly the best introduction you could ask for to the roots music of Italy is this 17 track compilation from Robi Droli (which loosely translates as "crazy things!"). Here are some of the best musicians in the country, from traditionalists like Tre Martelli and La Piazza to adventurous fusions by Ritmia and Re Niliu. Accordions, fiddles, bagpipes, reeds and drums are augmented by guitarists, bass and some fine singers. The set includes Tenores Di Bitti, whose polyphonic singing from Sardinia is stunning. La Ciapa Rusa are a unique ensemble that again has solid folks roots but no pretensions of revivalism. Their track on the album is both romantic and adventurous. Re Niliu offer their hyper-energy version of the folk music of Calabria, while ensemble Novocento create an almost lunatic atmosphere on a track of calliope-like ocarinas. The prize of the set is "La Stella e La Luna" by Ritmia from their album Forse Il Mare, possibly one of the best acoustic recordings ever made (really!). It features Ricardo Tesi on accordion, Alberto Balia and Enrico Frongia's pyrotechnic guitar work and Daniel Craighead on various reeds, with all contributing percussion and other instruments. It's 9 unstoppable minutes of "new routes" music that holds true to tradition while breaking borders left and right.

LA NOTTE DEL DIO CHE BALLA è andata in scena per la prima volta la sera del 25 luglio scorso (1998) a Cosenza
nel corso del festival "Invasioni". Il primo gruppo è salito sul palco alle nove e trenta e l'ultimo all'incirca verso
le tre del mattino. Quella sera hanno suonato: XICRO', il gruppo guidato da Antonello Ricci (etnomusicologo,
grande interprete del folk e virtuoso della chitarra battente), NIDI D'ARAC (gruppo leccese che parte da un
impianto musicale tipicamente trip hop, jungle e su cui opera una serie di innesti stilistici legati ai "terzinati"
ed alle "pizziche" della tradizione salentina), PANTAREI (il gruppo che ha elaborato un suono "etno-dub", e che,
quella sera, lavorò sugli effetti della decelerazione del ritmo), SUD SOUND SYSTEM (già molto popolari, non
solo a Cosenza, che per primi negli ultimi anni, hanno mischiato rap, impegno e dialetto), MADASKI (grande
manipolatore di suoni e costruttore di ritmi tecno), e naturalmente, verso la metà del concerto, io stessa.
Quella sera cercai di creare un "meltin'-sound" durante il mio set, portando contemporaneamente sul palco,
parte del mio gruppo abituale, Sasà Flauto alla chitarra e Flavio Zanon al basso, e poi Antonello Ricci alla
chitarra battente e voce, Alessandro Coppola e Ermanno Castriota dei Nidi d'Arac, rispettivamente tamburello
e violino, Pantarei Leon, Gianni Pierabella, Cesare Allah e Davide Grottelli dei Pantarei, alle percussioni,
batteria, system e fiati.
Ormai la musica (e il concerto in particolare) non è più vissuta come l'esperienza alta del singolo artista che si
offre agli altri, ma sempre di più come un rito collettivo durante il quale i musicisti sono attori e sciamani di un
forte spostamento psichico:"saltano", cioè, e fanno "saltare" chi ascolta, in uno stato emozionale fuori
dell'ordinario. Anche quella sera fu così, ancora una volta la musica svegliò "il Dio che balla". La funzione della
danza è quella di "agire la musica, di tradurla in un nuovo linguaggio. Chi balla mostra di non subire
passivamente la musica, ma attraverso i movimenti del corpo, ne certifica il potere e aggiunge nuovi significati.
Quella sera fu così, le oltre duemila persone presenti ballarono fino a notte fonda, forse non del tutto ignari
del fatto che, grazie al potere della musica, si stavano con entusiasmo lasciando posseder da forze misteriose
e liberatorie, che la vita di tutti i giorni tende a mantenere sopite, ma che lamusica sveglia e che,
per un tempo difficile da misurare con gli strumenti della ragione, trasforma il corpo di ognnuno nel "cavallo
degli dei"

THE NIGHT OF GOD dancing is staged for the first time on the evening of 25 July (1998) in Cosenza during the festival "Invasion". The first group took the stage at half past nine and the last about three o'clock in the morning. That night they played: XICRO ', the group led by Antonello Ricci (ethnomusicologist, a great interpreter of folk and guitar virtuoso flying), NIDI D'ARAC (Lecce group drawn from a music system typically trip hop, jungle and on which work a series of stylistic grafts related to "triplet" and the "pinch traditional Salento) Pantarei (the group that developed a sound" ethno-dub ", and
that night, worked on the effects of deceleration in the rate) SOUTH SOUND SYSTEM (already very popular, not only in Cosenza, who first in recent years, mixed rap, commitment and dialect) Madaski (great manipulator of sounds and builder techno rhythms), and of course, mid-concert, myself.
That night I tried to create a "meltin'-sound" during my set, bringing simultaneously on stage, part of my regular group, Sasa Flute Flavio Zanon on guitar and bass, and then Antonello Ricci on guitar and vocals swing, Alessandro Coppola and Ermanno Castriota of Nursery Arac, tambourine and violin respectively, Pantarei Leon, Gianni Pierabella, Caesar and David Grottelle of Allah Pantarei, percussion, drums, wind instruments and systems.

Andrea Stocchetti plays the ocarina beautifully, an egg-shaped flute made of clay. It seems that the name "ocarina" originated in Italy, although you find this kind of instruments in many parts of the world. Stocchetti plays different versions of the instrument, including one with a tuning plunger to vary the pitch. This is recommended for those who like the romanticism of Italian songs.

Tamburellisti is the soul of Pizzica and Taranta tradition in itself. The legendary band from Torrepaduli (Lecce) is one among the masterminds of Salento’s musical renaissance since the 80’s. Tamburellisti Di Torrepaduli are one of the few Taranta acts that have been playing live regularly abroad. They are lead by singer Pierpaolo De Giorgi, internationally known philosopher and aesthete. The band includes the most famous tambourine section from Salento and the exceptional ballerina Serena D'Amato, living icon of the Taranta dance scene. Pierpaolo De Giorgi and his philosophic-ethnic-musical research have brought the 'Taranta mith' back to life with its cultural-spiritual heritage of Greek origin, aimed to the psycho-energetic rebalance of the individual (iatro-musica). Taranta, or the music of the God Dionysus, as performed by Tamburellisti, brings out the values of gathering, dancing together and energetic wellness that come the ‘ritmo tarantato’ of  the tambourine that pulses synchronized with the heartbeat, the stars motion and the lifecycle. Tamburellisti di Torrepaduli are the band musically and conceptually closer to the ideal of Magna Grecia, due to the fact that they have reproposed the Greek tradition of monodia and released several albums of grìko music and taranta. Their 2009 tour has been extremely successful, starting on 13th March from Stockholm, to continue in Italy and Greece with over 40 dates, it returned to Athens at the end of October for the 'Cultural exchange for peace and the union of Mediterranean cultures'. Tamburellisti di Torrepaduli will also take part to the movie and its soundtrack of 'Ne te retourne pas' with Monica Bellucci and Sophie Marceu

Kicking off an accordion album with "Sous le Ciel de Paris" would seem like either an exercise in post modern irony or a display of total lack of imagination. When Esprit Follet does it, however, they give the Paris metro staple a spaciousness and generosity of spirit that immediately makes it your new old favorite song. Indeed this whole album of Franco-Italian music flows weightlessly on the vibration of a reed, or in this case, multiple reeds. Rinaldo Doro plays accordion and Sonia Cestonaro oboe and the two of them have a complex orchestral sound that plays on the pliability of both instruments. Just when you think that you're getting tired of all that reediness, they throw in a touch of mellotron, piano, some percussion (courtesy of Giorgio Negro) or guitar (ditto Maurizio Verna). They're elegant and romantic with a waltz ("Annalù"), driving and jazzy on a rigaudon ("Rigodons"), and retro-cool on a 60's cinema homage ("Dérapage"). My only beef is that sometimes the changes in style and mood can be too abrupt. A little more flow to the track order would make this a less whiplash-inducing listen. A minor complaint in view of such a trove of riches. Just listen to the delicately crafted "Omaggio a Fiorenzo Carpi: le musiche di Pinocchio." This four-part suite was inspired by a classic Italian television version of the ageless Collodi story. It uses every timbre the four musicians have at their disposal to create something evocative and tremendously listenable, as is the whole album

If only for a few downs, really incomprehensible, "O Bannu" (the auctioneer) would be one of the best albums of folk GM in recent times. Just listen to the initial "Polcabasilisca" and appreciate the valuable work of rebuilding the polka – faster than usual, explosive in a vertigo of sound that ideally connects the past (buried, moldy, vilified despite ofthe nostalgia of the alleged insane conservative tradition) and the time of today (elusive, 'liquid', plural) reaffirming that reality can only be in flux. Like it or not.
Graziano Accinni, creator of the project Ethnos, guitarist and composer working in pop music for a  long time, returns to his native region and walks through the rubble of Basilicata, a land that seems left in the first World War, yet so fascinating in its dignified rural poverty. In the sixteen pieces that make up this score there are the tradition of the Agri Valley (province of Potenza) (devotional songs, lullabies, tarantella, dance), and suggestions of new composition that draw skilfully Greek tradition, Moroccan, Spanish and Portuguese.
A compact body, governed by an underlying logic convincing (the idea of a unique music of Southern Europe, ie, which is based across the Mediterranean), played by excellent musicians of various origins, enveloping sound with soul, of very balanced, never too ostentatious in their time of great instrumental virtuosity…

Nidi d'Arac ::: Salento senza tempo

During the 1990s, the pizzica taranta, a traditional music of the Salento peninsula in the Puglia region of southern Italy, was taken up both by folk revivalists and more forward-looking musicians. Groups such as Aramire and Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino specialized in straight-up, traditional renderings of pizzica, sometimes with new, topical lyrics. Others, most notably Nidi D'Arac, were grounded in the tradition but mixed pizzica with techno, dub, and Balkan and North African music.
Nidi D'Arac, founded and led by the charismatic singer-guitarist-percussionist Alessandro Coppola, pulled off a brilliant synthesis of Salento roots music and electronica with their 2006 album, Saint Rocco's Rave. Purists may have been put off, but as Rootsworld's Lee Blackstone observed, "all the elements that make Nidi D'Arac sonically mysterious are present in abundance: Coppola's soaring voice, violin and flute, tambourine flourishes, dub and echo flitting about the production. It is an album where the band sounds incredibly confident and not a song is misplaced."
Coppola apparently decided that he'd taken the fusion of folk roots and electronica as far as he could, since his latest, Salento Senza Tempo (Timeless Salento) is a complete u-turn from the experimentation of St. Rocco's Rave. The CD notes state, in fact, that it's not even a new Nidi D'Arac album but rather a tribute to the traditional music of Salento.
Coppola et al. have turned off the synths and sequencers for their latest, but Salento Senza Tempo, though entirely acoustic, isn't all traditional pizzica. Piano, strings, and traps imbue the folk-based material with a welcome modernity.
The not-Nidi aspect is evident in the personnel. Only a few of the sixteen tracks feature the entire band, a shifting aggregation whose core, in addition to Coppola, includes vocalist Vera De Lecce, violinist Rodrigo D'Erasmo and the excellent percussionist Maurizio Catania. Interspersed among the ensemble numbers are solo and duo pieces. There are complete songs and brief instrumental interludes that serve as connective tissue between them.
Guest musicians, including I Tamburellisti di S.Rocco, accompany Coppola on several tracks. The Tamburellisti, players of the tamburello, a large tambourine, themselves represent a blend of tradition and modernity. The group was formed from musicians representing two different southern Italian percussion schools, the more traditional from Torrepaduli, a quarter in the Salento town of Ruffano, the other represented by Andrea Piccioni, a percussionist noted for adapting the tamburello to diverse, non-folk settings and styles.
The pizzica derives from an ancient dance in whose frenetic rhythms impoverished Salentini found momentary release from the harshness of their lives. The melancholy and sorrow of Salento Senza Tempo is a reminder that pizzica, like certain reggae, is "sufferers'" music. "Mmalavita," a solo by Coppola, leads into "Su rrivatu a San Frangiscu," a grim narrative that relates what happens to a man living the malavita, the criminal life, when he ends up in a prison where pitiless mafia violence and murder reign.
There are love songs, but they're also colored by deep sadness. In "Su vinutu luntanu luntanu," a lover returns from afar bringing a serenade he fears his inamorata will not accept; frantic and lovelorn, he waits outside her door, imploring her to let him in.
Salento Senza Tempo has been thoughtfully conceived and impeccably arranged, played and sung. It's a testament to Alessandro Coppola's seriousness of purpose, his deep knowledge of and love for the traditional music of Salento. I admire it quite a bit, and love some of it. But overall it doesn't thrill me like St. Rocco's Rave. For me, the radically different versions of "Quante Tarante?," a track that appears on both albums, say it all. On Saint Rocco's Rave it's an upbeat, techno-dub mood elevator that gives me happy feet; the more restrained and traditional Salento Senza Tempo version doesn't.
I hope Coppola's latest is a temporary detour from his masterful mixing of Salento tradition with contaminazioni from other musical cultures. (That term has a positive connotation in Italian, signifying the enrichment of local idioms through the incorporation of foreign elements.) In fact, the newest incarnation of Nidi D'Arac suggests he's returned to that approach. The current lineup features three tamburellisti, but also a "dub master."

Mauro Palmas ::: Cainà

He is a very famous artist in Sardinia and has long been the musical companion of vocalist Elena Ledda, with whom he founded the legendary group Suonofficina in 1983. Mauro Palmas has worked with personalities such as Maria Carta, Riccardo Tesi, Paolo Fresu, Don Moye and Lester Bowie; he has released an album with popular Italian political songs and composed music for several movies, including »Sonos 'e memoria« by Gianfranco Cabiddu (together with Paolo Fresu).
There is a thread running through his musical career: his openness to all types of music of many different backgrounds and his love of forming his own style from all these elements.
Mauro Palmas derives his inspiration from the rich musical tradition of his Sardinian home; yet at the same time he is a modern musician, equally fascinated by jazz, pop and sounds from other countries. So we cannot compare his approach to his Sardinian heritage with that of folk musicians: rather he takes traditional elements and adapts them in a contemporary way to fit his own ideas. Palmas' compositions cannot be categorised as "Sardinian music of today" but simply as the creation of an inventive musician.
His open mind is shown particularly clearly in the music to the movie Cainà - and particularly for its instrumentation. In the foreground are the mandola and the mandoloncello - originally instruments of Renaissance music, which he himself plays in his varied and individual way (from the classic arpeggio and Sardinian cantu a boghes de chitarra to solo passages with a plectrum, reminiscent of Arab lute playing). He has added a string ensemble (quartet, quintet and double quintet in succession) and also Sardinian folk instruments (barrel organ, launeddas, sulittu). On some tracks a rhythm group of electric bass guitar and percussion form the foundation for Riccardo Tesi's accordion and Gavino Murgia's saxophone, which is strongly present throughout the work.
The spectrum of origin of this music is huge: partly written scores and partly improvised music; oriental scales and passages in 7/8 time point to the Balkans and the Middle East. The pentatonic scales are of African origin. We also hear an arrangement of a ballu campidanesu (folk dance) inspired by launedda music. And finally strings, mandolas and accordion play two more traditional pieces: the Disispirada from Sardinian guitar repertoire and the well-known Deus ti salvet Maria, an Ave Maria in Sardinian which Maria Carta made famous all through Italy.
This music was written to accompany a silent movie called Cainà (The Island and the Continent) which was filmed on Sardinia in 1922 by Gennaro Righelli. The only remaining copy of the work was rediscovered in 1992 in an archive in Prague and subsequently restored at the order of the Società Umanitaria / Cineteca Sarda. As most Italian silent movies have been lost, the find was a significant cultural document for Italy and particularly for Sardinia. Using the story of Cainà the shepherd girl, Righelli painted a realistic portrait of the island and its scenery and Sardinian society with its archetypal popular figures who no longer exist.
"One could question whether a silent movie really needs a soundtrack," was Mauro Palmas' comment on the project. "But experience shows that from 1995 until today hardly anyone has seen Cainà without the music. With the music and thanks to the live performances the film has become a great success seen by a total of about twenty thousand visitors to Sardinia and outside the island, in Italy and Europe. The pictures have given meaning to the music and the music has emphasised the film. It has a power which draws the viewer into the middle of the film. That was one of the primary aims of the project: to show a large audience a work which would otherwise have remained invisible and unknown in its own country."
Of course the reverse question could also be asked: do we need the music without the pictures or the story they tell? Here we are in agreement with Mauro Palmas: as a pure listening experience this music has power and presence, because he has succeeded magnificently in translating the exotic nature of the setting, the drama of the plot and the "great cinematographic dignity" of the movie into sound.

It isn't fictive folk music, it isn't jazz, it isn't classical, it isn't traditional or world music - it's simply Sardinian music from Sardinian musicians. The idea emerged through the work of the film director Gianfranco Cabbido, who resides in Rome. While doing research some eight years ago in preparation for his film Bakunin's Children, he was surprised by his discovery of an abundance of film material covering life in Sardinia from the 1930's to the 50's. The film was a reflection of what was even for him, as a native Sardinian, an almost forgotten world. He lovingly restored the material, and soon had developed the idea of putting the material together as a sort of documentary. And what made more sense than to have musicians accompany this visual record live on stage? The document was from the period of the silent movies, so why not do it as it had been done in those earlier days? It was only logical for the onetime amateur jazz musician Cabiddu to come up with the idea of giving a musician such Paulo Fresu this task. The ground-work for "Sonos e memoria - Sound and Remembrance" was laid. "I don't want to show the traditional side of Sardinia in the music. The film shows that. I wanted to track down the elements of the traditional music that still exist and are relevant today. We show what has developed out of the tradition up to the present day." Paulo Fresu
