Marusic IsTrio ::: Istrophonia

courtesy of katjusha at World music
Music CD "Istrophonia", by Istrian musicologist Dario Marušić and his band "IsTrio", with reinterpretations of original Istrian traditional songs, dedicated to Jules Verne, with quoting from "Mathias Sandorf" on the cover.
The pluriethnic and multicultural microcosm of Istria is a meeting point and a point of constant contact, exchange, permeation, and transformation, but also the maintenance of continuity of the musical cultures of the Croats, Slovenes, Italians, Istro-Romanians and Peroj-Montenegrins as autochtonous ethnic groups. The Istrian modus vivendi that translates multiculturality to authentic, everyday culture can be defined as an articulate and unique system of historical, ethnic, cultural and linguistic shades that marks and determines the specific quality of Istria in relation to most of Croatian, Slovenian, and Italian, but also many other European areas.
It s not the mere sum of different cultural substances, which, by historical circumstances, exist one next to each other, but it is more a centuries-long, spiritually-cultural sedimentation and intertwinement in which, what is special productively comes up from specific unity of cultural differences. Because of true intercultural communication, multicultural facts are not made distincitve but only being recognized

Vruja ::: Vruja

courtesy of Stari prdec
VRUJA is a musical group, which continues the tradition of the musical groups from the Slovene Istria and which have had a great influence on the increased knowledge and popularization of the musical heritage of Istria in the latest decades. The group's name is of a dialectic origin and it means source, spring.
The group is a successful joint of experienced musicians, who are considered the pioneers in the folk music revival, as well as younger ones, who have grown up in close contact with tradition. Vruja is trying in its own way to add yet another little stone to the mosaic of interpretation and performance of the Istrian's musical heritage. The musical experience of a single member and their mutual work are expressed in the group's performances and thus, the group is regarded as a representative of a musical trend, known all over the world as the Folk music revival.
The Istrian peninsula is a multicultural and multiethnic territory and such is the structure of the group's members. Therefore, it is obvious that in their performances they present the musical tradition of the whole Istria. Their musical material is obtained from different sources, that is by immediate research carrired out by some of the members, as well as by looking for the already written musical motives and by cooperating with recognized ethno-musicologists, folklorists and archives. Vruja begins its musical journey with some songs from the Italian Karst, the territory in the immediate vicinity of Istria. In the presentation of the musical tradition of northern Istria the members of the group remain devoted to the instruments, typical of this area, like vijulin (violin), bajs (Istrian two-stringed bassett), klarin (clarinet) and remonika (accordion). This set of instruments is sometimes enlivened by daska (wash-board) and with this combination they play the most known dances of northern Istria, such as polka, valcer, šaltin, šete paši, cotič, manfrina, mazurka, štajra, vilota and do paši.
The musical tradition from southern Istria is presented with the typical instruments like vela i mala sopela or roženica (woodwind instrument with double reed), meh or mih (Istrian bagpipes) and šurle (double whistle with single reed). With these instruments some most typical tunes are played, such as mantinjada or balun. With the addition of the guitar, mandolin, flute, electric bass and bagpipes it allows Vruja to create a musical image from its own conception and inspiration.

The group stands out by singing the songs from southern Istria, that is the two-voiced singing known as na tanko i debelo, canto sotto le pive from the village of Galižana, villota - two-voiced singing from the coastal towns and the songs from the Slovene Istria. Three different dialects can be recognized in these songs: čakavski (Croatian Istria), šavrinski (Slovene Istria) and Istrian-Venetian (Italian). The members of the group are also involved in teaching children in schools, kindergartens and different summer camps about Istrian musical tradition, whereas, for adults, instrumental and dance workshops, as well as seminars are organized.
From its source Vruja conveys a fresh, merry and cheerful spirit of the Istrian people and brings it at their concerts for you to enjoy and dance with them.

Rudi Bučar ::: Kambiament

Courtesy of balcanophitecus at World Music
Born in 1978 in Koper has cultivated a great love for music and has had an innate gift for singing since his early childhood. His experiences have grown in various choirs as MEPZ Obala – one of the most prestigious Slovenian and international choirs in which he performed also as a soloist. As an extremely creative teenager, he united his talent and emotional power in the group Spirits which in 1998 released the first (and the only) record Zemljin krik (The Earth's Scream). Rudi's immense talent and ability to adapt his voice to any musical style has drawn the attention of many diverse artists. Rudi had been collaborating in the studio and on stage with numerous Slovenian artists: Sounds of Slovenia, Zdenko Cotic, Danilo Kocjancic, Drago Mislej Mef, Tinkara Kovac, Jan Plestenjak, Slavko Ivancic, Šank Rock, Zablujena Generacija, Avtomobili, Zmelkoow, Alenka Godec and many others until he met the prominent researcher of the Istrian popular traditions Luciano Kleva. With a dictaphone in his hand he visited several Istrian villages exploring the Istrian musical tradition. He later reshaped the recorded songs in his own way and released his first solo album Kapot (meaning Coat, December 2003). Kapot is a joint of melodies and lyrics of the Istrian-Venetian origins, which with Rudi's true passion, artistic fantasy and vocal interpretation touches and fascinates each of us. After all, the album has already been reissued twice, which is, specially for folk music in Slovenia, considered to be a great success. Besides, in the late 90's he was awarded Gallus prize for his musical activity, he took part in various outstanding theatrical projects of the Slovenian Theatre in Triest, in theatrical performances directed by Katja Pegan and in several national celebrations and anniversaries. After studying for two years at the Koper School of Music he is now attending the Music Conservatory »Giuseppe Tartini« in Triest. His great wish to make a deeper research of Istrian traditions led him to his new creation- the album Kambiament in 2007
