VV.AA. ::: Traditional songs and dances of Sardinia



And, with perfect timing, here's a new CD from Saydisc.  The Damian Webb tag alerts me to the possibility of songs by children - though the general presentation of this record did not prepare me for the fact that only 32 of the total 57 minutes playing time would be by adults.  Might the majority of potential purchasers feel slightly cheated?  One could argue that they shouldn't, particularly given the general high quality of the youngsters' performances (sound clip).  But they certainly should be by the quality of the booklet notes - also by Fr Webb - which manage to combine ignorance, irrelevant anecdote, misleading information and some personal observations which reveal a most unpleasantly patronising attitude...

Mauro Palmas ::: Cainà



He is a very famous artist in Sardinia and has long been the musical companion of vocalist Elena Ledda, with whom he founded the legendary group Suonofficina in 1983. Mauro Palmas has worked with personalities such as Maria Carta, Riccardo Tesi, Paolo Fresu, Don Moye and Lester Bowie; he has released an album with popular Italian political songs and composed music for several movies, including »Sonos 'e memoria« by Gianfranco Cabiddu (together with Paolo Fresu).
There is a thread running through his musical career: his openness to all types of music of many different backgrounds and his love of forming his own style from all these elements.
Mauro Palmas derives his inspiration from the rich musical tradition of his Sardinian home; yet at the same time he is a modern musician, equally fascinated by jazz, pop and sounds from other countries. So we cannot compare his approach to his Sardinian heritage with that of folk musicians: rather he takes traditional elements and adapts them in a contemporary way to fit his own ideas. Palmas' compositions cannot be categorised as "Sardinian music of today" but simply as the creation of an inventive musician.
His open mind is shown particularly clearly in the music to the movie Cainà - and particularly for its instrumentation. In the foreground are the mandola and the mandoloncello - originally instruments of Renaissance music, which he himself plays in his varied and individual way (from the classic arpeggio and Sardinian cantu a boghes de chitarra to solo passages with a plectrum, reminiscent of Arab lute playing). He has added a string ensemble (quartet, quintet and double quintet in succession) and also Sardinian folk instruments (barrel organ, launeddas, sulittu). On some tracks a rhythm group of electric bass guitar and percussion form the foundation for Riccardo Tesi's accordion and Gavino Murgia's saxophone, which is strongly present throughout the work.
The spectrum of origin of this music is huge: partly written scores and partly improvised music; oriental scales and passages in 7/8 time point to the Balkans and the Middle East. The pentatonic scales are of African origin. We also hear an arrangement of a ballu campidanesu (folk dance) inspired by launedda music. And finally strings, mandolas and accordion play two more traditional pieces: the Disispirada from Sardinian guitar repertoire and the well-known Deus ti salvet Maria, an Ave Maria in Sardinian which Maria Carta made famous all through Italy.
This music was written to accompany a silent movie called Cainà (The Island and the Continent) which was filmed on Sardinia in 1922 by Gennaro Righelli. The only remaining copy of the work was rediscovered in 1992 in an archive in Prague and subsequently restored at the order of the Società Umanitaria / Cineteca Sarda. As most Italian silent movies have been lost, the find was a significant cultural document for Italy and particularly for Sardinia. Using the story of Cainà the shepherd girl, Righelli painted a realistic portrait of the island and its scenery and Sardinian society with its archetypal popular figures who no longer exist.
"One could question whether a silent movie really needs a soundtrack," was Mauro Palmas' comment on the project. "But experience shows that from 1995 until today hardly anyone has seen Cainà without the music. With the music and thanks to the live performances the film has become a great success seen by a total of about twenty thousand visitors to Sardinia and outside the island, in Italy and Europe. The pictures have given meaning to the music and the music has emphasised the film. It has a power which draws the viewer into the middle of the film. That was one of the primary aims of the project: to show a large audience a work which would otherwise have remained invisible and unknown in its own country."
Of course the reverse question could also be asked: do we need the music without the pictures or the story they tell? Here we are in agreement with Mauro Palmas: as a pure listening experience this music has power and presence, because he has succeeded magnificently in translating the exotic nature of the setting, the drama of the plot and the "great cinematographic dignity" of the movie into sound.

VV.AA. ::: Sonos ‘e memoria

It isn't fictive folk music, it isn't jazz, it isn't classical, it isn't traditional or world music - it's simply Sardinian music from Sardinian musicians. The idea emerged through the work of the film director Gianfranco Cabbido, who resides in Rome. While doing research some eight years ago in preparation for his film Bakunin's Children, he was surprised by his discovery of an abundance of film material covering life in Sardinia from the 1930's to the 50's. The film was a reflection of what was even for him, as a native Sardinian, an almost forgotten world. He lovingly restored the material, and soon had developed the idea of putting the material together as a sort of documentary. And what made more sense than to have musicians accompany this visual record live on stage? The document was from the period of the silent movies, so why not do it as it had been done in those earlier days? It was only logical for the onetime amateur jazz musician Cabiddu to come up with the idea of giving a musician such Paulo Fresu this task. The ground-work for "Sonos e memoria - Sound and Remembrance" was laid. "I don't want to show the traditional side of Sardinia in the music. The film shows that. I wanted to track down the elements of the traditional music that still exist and are relevant today. We show what has developed out of the tradition up to the present day." Paulo Fresu

Tenores de Oniferi ::: Polyphonic singing from Sardinia


Strictly a cappella, Polyphonic Singing from Sardinia is an appealing example of the type of traditional vocal-group performing that has been heard on the Italian island of Sardinia for centuries. There are some similarities between the harmonies employed by Tenores de Oniferi (one of Sardinia's most well-respected traditional vocal groups) and the harmonies used by Catholic monks in Italy, Spain and Portugal. In fact, play this CD next to the a cappella Chant by The Benedictine Monks of Santo Domingo de Silos (a fine collection of Gregorian chants by monks in a Spanish monastery), and you can't help but notice the parallels. But the Italian lyrics embraced by the Tenores de Oniferi can be either secular or spiritual in nature. Traditional Sardinian vocalists often come up with improvised lyrics, and sometimes, they turn their attention to Sardinian poetry of previous centuries. "Su Determinu" was written by the 19th century poet Paulicu Mossa, while "Sos Antigos" comes from poet Antioco Casula Montanaru (1888-1957). Music of the World can usually be counted on for thoughtful liner notes, and for this album, the label has printed the Italian lyrics as well as English translations. Recommended

Sardinia has a traditional inheritance among richest and alive of the western world. The Sardinians in particular developed a broad repertory of the human voice which reveals a major and old knowledge musical structures of the polyphony. The song has tenores is a particular type of this repertory, that l' one finds only in Barbagia-Baronìa, in the north-eastern center of l' island. In this mountainous region, the songs are in the middle of the village Community life, which finds its expression sharp in the festivals, qu' they are laic or nuns. They are polyphonies has cappella, in vernacular language (still near to Latin), obligatorily practised with four votes. The melody is entonnée by the soloist, his oche (the voice), which sings the poem or improvises. L' intervention of the three other voices (its mesu oche, its countered and known bassu, c' be-with-to say the voice acute, of baritone and basic) occurs during the development of the topic; they generally sing on only one note of which they vary colourings by l' use of syllables such as, for example, bim, bam, boom. The technique of the song of throat and that of the held sounds reveal the so captivating sound phenomenon song has tenores: the spectrum of the harmonics. One also recognizes, in these voices, the imitations of the cries d' animals which are specific to the pastoral world. Tenores sing in circle. Sometimes, during the festival, they give each other the arm and start to dance. Being held tight, rigid, they turn to small given rhythm steps. The public widens the circle then and enters the ball. Cantori della confraternita di Santa Croce di Castelsardo ::: Castelsardo: processione del Lunissanti 2007


More than 500 years old, Confraternita di Santa Croce di Castelsardo, singers of high aesthetic and technical level, sings in its polivocal Mediterranean style in the original context of Easter Monday celebrations. This recording starts with the processione at 7 in the morning till the sunset and  comprise convivial moments of songs during the lunch of the confraternita on the Tergu meadows

Religious music, as is the case in Corsica, still employs Latin texts, and the singers' understanding of them is very approximate. Bernard Lortat-Jacob's magnificent anthology of Holy Week music includes settings of the Miserere from Cuglieri (in the province of Oristano), Santu Lussurgiu (Oristano), Castelsardo (three different versions for different occasions), of the Stabat Mater from Cuglieri, Aidomaggiore (Oristano), Bonnanaro (province of Sassari) and Castelsardo. There is also a Jesus from Castelsardo , whose text runs "Jesus a Petro ter negato/Miserere nobis/Christe exaudi nos", and one piece in the Sardinian language, Sa novena. Complementary repertoire, with further pieces in Sardinian, may be found on Winter & Winter's anthology Voches de Sardinna 2, with excellent accompanying photographic documentation but no texts or commentary. Pinuccio Solinas’s astounding collection of six discs includes no less than eight versions of the Miserere (Alà dei Sardi, two versions from Nughedu San Nicolò, Nulvi, Pattada, Perfugas, Pozzomaggiore and Cheremule), and eight of the Stabat Mater (Alà dei Sardi, Berchidda, Castelsardo, Ittireddu, Laerru, Mores, Nughedu San Nicolò and Pattada), and a large number of other sacred pieces. The collection includes a brief introduction and, importantly, all the sung texts with translations in both Italian and English. This set is a major contribution to the discography
