Massimo Ferrante ::: Jamu

Following the astonishing U Ciucciu (fy 8090) in 2005 and Ricuordi (fy 8113) in 2006, here is the latest original release by MASSIMO FERRANTE. With Jamu, his commitment in researching the musical and social reality in Souther Italy is renewed. His unmistakable style and his unquestionable unique 12 strings guitar sound, mark this recording characterized by bold matchings. The first and last tracks stem out from the celebrated poem (divided in two sections) by Ingnazio Buttitta, Lingua e Dialettu, transformed in song thanks to the arrangement and the generous music interventions by Antonello Paliotti (classic guitar, bandoneon, mandolin, bass). The cue is given by the infamous lyrics (Un popolo / mettetelo in catene / spogliatelo / tappategli la bocca, / è ancora libero) (People, even if in chains, naked, silenced are still free), not less tough is the following verse (Un popolo / diventa povero e servo / quando gli rubano la lingua / ricevuta dai padri: / è perso per sempre)(People become poor and slave when the language given by its fathers is stolen: then is lost forever). Always by Buttitta are the lyrics of Lamentu pi la morti di Turiddu Carnivali, dedicated to the trade union leader killed by the Sicilian mafia in 1955, that FERRANTE interprets with the Catania guitar. An important recovering is Strina du judeo, a traditional chant of Calabria, here proposed with beautiful variations by Ferrante with Lutte Berg at the electric guitar, Lello Perarca bass and Enrico Del Gaudio drums. Strine are the traditional Christmas Carols, but this one is marked by caustically raging tones against civil and religious institutions. Ari cincu on the other hand is a joggese chant in a brass band style, in which Francesco Banchini clarinet performs. We carry on with the bitter and ironic Ha detto De Gasperi a tutti i divoti, interpreted by Ferrante in Black and white, following the ballad singer fashion, and with Tu compagno, originally by Canzoniere delle Lame, that Ferrante dedicates to all nowadays left winged politicians and to which Lutte Berg wittingly adds some sound “effects”. Again the Swedish born guitarist with Calabria born father is responsible for the crafty jazzy ‘U monacu. A solid Tarantella cannot be missed (Tarantella Minore), FERRANTE doesn’t leave out the Occitane minorities from Guardia Piemontese, in the Cosenza province, presenting here a surreal song in Lingue D’Oc (La piov e la fa soulelh)

italian traditional music from the same guy who conceived and run "La Notte Della Taranta", here playing the "organetto diatonico" (some sort of a small accordion) and conducting this orchestra of traditional instruments also including the hurdy-gurdy. "Taranta d'Amore" is the title of their/his last record, here with a review copied from Amazon >>> Sparagna Ambrogio is one of the most important musicians from Italian folk music. His musical project which explores the Southern of Italy and the Mediterranean musical tradition involves his compositions and ballads. A wide range of both traditional and original songs, all is made to exalt the melodic inspiration and armonic richness of the Ambrogio Sparagna accordeon, as well as the acrobatic rhythmical force and passion of the tambourines, ciaramella (traditional oboe), and the beating guitar (a kind of guitar diffused in Southern Italy) of his musical friends. Ambrogio utilize Arts Comedy , with the Neapolitan Theatre masks which is a tradition of the music. This album for the Parco Della Musica label features a breathtaking number of musicians and traditional instruments

VV.AA. ::: La notte del dio che balla

LA NOTTE DEL DIO CHE BALLA è andata in scena per la prima volta la sera del 25 luglio scorso (1998) a Cosenza
nel corso del festival "Invasioni". Il primo gruppo è salito sul palco alle nove e trenta e l'ultimo all'incirca verso
le tre del mattino. Quella sera hanno suonato: XICRO', il gruppo guidato da Antonello Ricci (etnomusicologo,
grande interprete del folk e virtuoso della chitarra battente), NIDI D'ARAC (gruppo leccese che parte da un
impianto musicale tipicamente trip hop, jungle e su cui opera una serie di innesti stilistici legati ai "terzinati"
ed alle "pizziche" della tradizione salentina), PANTAREI (il gruppo che ha elaborato un suono "etno-dub", e che,
quella sera, lavorò sugli effetti della decelerazione del ritmo), SUD SOUND SYSTEM (già molto popolari, non
solo a Cosenza, che per primi negli ultimi anni, hanno mischiato rap, impegno e dialetto), MADASKI (grande
manipolatore di suoni e costruttore di ritmi tecno), e naturalmente, verso la metà del concerto, io stessa.
Quella sera cercai di creare un "meltin'-sound" durante il mio set, portando contemporaneamente sul palco,
parte del mio gruppo abituale, Sasà Flauto alla chitarra e Flavio Zanon al basso, e poi Antonello Ricci alla
chitarra battente e voce, Alessandro Coppola e Ermanno Castriota dei Nidi d'Arac, rispettivamente tamburello
e violino, Pantarei Leon, Gianni Pierabella, Cesare Allah e Davide Grottelli dei Pantarei, alle percussioni,
batteria, system e fiati.
Ormai la musica (e il concerto in particolare) non è più vissuta come l'esperienza alta del singolo artista che si
offre agli altri, ma sempre di più come un rito collettivo durante il quale i musicisti sono attori e sciamani di un
forte spostamento psichico:"saltano", cioè, e fanno "saltare" chi ascolta, in uno stato emozionale fuori
dell'ordinario. Anche quella sera fu così, ancora una volta la musica svegliò "il Dio che balla". La funzione della
danza è quella di "agire la musica, di tradurla in un nuovo linguaggio. Chi balla mostra di non subire
passivamente la musica, ma attraverso i movimenti del corpo, ne certifica il potere e aggiunge nuovi significati.
Quella sera fu così, le oltre duemila persone presenti ballarono fino a notte fonda, forse non del tutto ignari
del fatto che, grazie al potere della musica, si stavano con entusiasmo lasciando posseder da forze misteriose
e liberatorie, che la vita di tutti i giorni tende a mantenere sopite, ma che lamusica sveglia e che,
per un tempo difficile da misurare con gli strumenti della ragione, trasforma il corpo di ognnuno nel "cavallo
degli dei"

THE NIGHT OF GOD dancing is staged for the first time on the evening of 25 July (1998) in Cosenza during the festival "Invasion". The first group took the stage at half past nine and the last about three o'clock in the morning. An exact aural reproduction of the Tarantella has been made possible for the first time through numeric transposition. Popular Tarantellas that have been passed down orally and classical Tarantellas that belong to the written tradition have been interwoven to create a new backdrop which highlights both rhythm and melody. Add to this the individual characteristics which are singular to each region and the result is a rich and varied tableau. The Tarantella is the coming together of DANCE-SOUND-COLOUR as a means to catharsis. If you dance you will find that each piece will require you to perform different steps until ultimately you feel you are on a path that will lead you to transcend the material, that will take you from the earth to the heavens, from darkness to light.

Hellenic musical tradition in South Italy
This cd was published by the Greek label Peloponnesian folklore Foundation. It contains field recordings about the musical tradition of the Hellenic comunities in Salento, Calabria adn Sicily. Sorry no booklet, only track list. I'll try to scan it soon.

Approximately one year on from the release of his debut album, U Ciuccio (Felmay fy 8090) MASSIMO FERRANTE is back with another collection of pieces culled from the folk heritage of Southern Italy. With his trusty twelve-string and his inimitable voice, a voice that is strong though never strident, and muscular and passionate enough to do justice to the songs of the Mediterranean, FERRANTE interprets a repertoire of music taken from a variety of geographical and stylistic areas. Navigating between personal memory and new discoveries FERRANTE finds the right balance, interpreting his material in such a way as to bring out the similarities and differences of songs with a decidedly rétro flavour. FERRANTE’s versions steer clear of uniformity and the flatness of a generic Mediterranean, managing in fully exploiting the many nuances and shadings of a composite, heterogeneous cultural region that is nonetheless not without its patches of common ground. His new CD RICUORDI includes songs of protest and other social themes, stornelli, legends set to music, songs of celebration, singer storyteller numbers and dance tunes. Their sources are numerous, ranging from old LPs or tapes bought from village fetes to ethnomusicologists’ collections, while often FERRANTE relies purely on memory, recalling and reproducing songs heard in his youth while playing bingo with his aunt or during festivals and other community gatherings. And there’s no shortage of surprises either, such as his reworking of Georges Moustaki’s “En Méditerranèe” a French ballad from the early 1970s whose chiaroscuro atmosphere FERRANTE captures perfectly; or a somewhat jazzed-up version of “Rosso colore”, a migration song composed by the late and much missed Pierangelo Bertoli. Among the numerous first rate guest musicians who contributed to the recording are Francesco Migliaccio (accordion), Enrico Del Gaudio (drums), Roberto Giangrande (double bass), Francesco Banchini (clarinet), Rino Saggio (flute and sax), Leonardo Massa (cello), whose finely executed parts are brilliantly interwoven in FERRANTE’s seductive, exquisitely produced arrangements. For FERRANTE’s art consists in making universal material that only the most superficial of listens could deem to be the fruit of local cultures

A fascinating, original crossover of folk and classical, with the musicians of the early music ensemble L’Arpeggiata joining the illustrious singers Galeazzi and Beasley, performed on modern and ancient instruments including chitarra battente, lutes, harp, psaltry. It's a mix of traditional songs and composed works form the 17th century, which gives it a unique and uncompromising quality.

In 1630 a strange disease called “Tarantism” struck Italy. It was attributed to a spider’s bite with alternating symptoms of exaltation and prostration. Tarantella are enchanting songs and dances meant to heal the patient by creating a state of trance
