VV.AA. ::: Sonos ‘e memoria

Recorded live at Teatro Comunale di Cagliari and Teatro Verdi di Sassari, April 29 - 30 1996
It isn't fictive folk music, it isn't jazz, it isn't classical, it isn't traditional or world music - it's simply Sardinian music from Sardinian musicians. The idea emerged through the work of the film director Gianfranco Cabbido, who resides in Rome. While doing research some eight years ago in preparation for his film Bakunin's Children, he was surprised by his discovery of an abundance of film material covering life in Sardinia from the 1930's to the 50's. The film was a reflection of what was even for him, as a native Sardinian, an almost forgotten world. He lovingly restored the material, and soon had developed the idea of putting the material together as a sort of documentary. And what made more sense than to have musicians accompany this visual record live on stage? The document was from the period of the silent movies, so why not do it as it had been done in those earlier days? It was only logical for the onetime amateur jazz musician Cabiddu to come up with the idea of giving a musician such Paulo Fresu this task. The ground-work for "Sonos e memoria - Sound and Remembrance" was laid. "I don't want to show the traditional side of Sardinia in the music. The film shows that. I wanted to track down the elements of the traditional music that still exist and are relevant today. We show what has developed out of the tradition up to the present day." Paulo Fresu
A remarkable sound track to a documentary by Gianfranco Cabiddu, recorded live as the musicians watched the film. It moves from Sardinian folk music to edgy-outside improv to structured big-band jazz, fuled by incredible musicianship
Gianfranco Cabiddu filmed another documentary titled Passaggi di tempo about the making of this soundtrack

Lucilla Galeazzi, Vincent Courtois & Michel Godard ::: Trio Rouge

In his linear notes to Trio Rouge, Ralf Dombrowski, the producer of the album, recounts his memories of the Talos Jazz Festival - the venue in which this unusual group first came to his attention. Due to bad weather, he tells us, the concert was shifted from the great outdoors to the ugly, functional civic centre. Naturally, the mood of the day was dampened - and the cello/tuba/vocals combination that had just stepped on to the stage offered little promise of cheering things up. But, as Dombrowski himself describes it, the discontent was not to last long: ‘when Lucilla Galeazzi [left] began to sing the sober surroundings were forgotten... The crowd went wild and I was impressed.’
Galeazzi, indeed, has one of those voices that instantly grabs the listener - rich, intense and filled with emotion, but never straying from a breathtaking precision that shines of musicality. And like all great musicians, she employs her talents with the utmost versatility. Passion and defiance seep through every note of songs like ‘Voglio Una Casa’, whilst sensitivity and tenderness characterise ‘Per Vita Bella’. The most impressive tune of the collection is the short but absorbing ‘Stornelli A Saltrarello’. Accompanied only by steady clapping, Galeazzi’s expressive vocals glide with ease through the rhythmical mesh of this beautiful traditional melody. The rapid blast of notes at the end has to be heard to be believed...
And so does Michel Godard on tuba. As uninspiring as the instrument may be in the hands of the average performer, Godard’s virtuousity is an utter delight to listen to. Attaining an almost voice-like quality, bending and stretching the notes like elastic, his solos breath tremendous life in to the sparse compositions of the trio. Experimental as he often is, though, Godard never allows his talents to compromise the tone and feel of the songs. His solos often work round the melody already laid down by the vocals, whilst in songs like ‘Una Serenata’ he shows his willingness to stick very rigidly to the simple, thumping bass line required to carry the tune forward.
It is Courtois, of course, who by-in-large provides the ‘rhythm section’. Whether strumming at pizzicato chords or sawing away at a riff, his rhythmic assurance and precise approach do away with the need for percussion. In saying this, his more melodic work is also extremely impressive, bringing a depth and richness to the pieces, as well as a haunting quality.
There can little doubt, then, that Trio Rouge is a brilliant musical accomplishment - original, warm and highly absorbing. The only thing that concerns me in making my recommendation is that ‘jazz’ is a rather misleading term to describe this form of music. Whilst a jazz-like freedom seeps through the work - as does a jazz-like understanding of harmony - don’t be expecting any walking bass lines, swinging melodies or toe-tapping beats. These are sparse, intense compositions rooted in a spirit of traditional folk songs... Still, to the open-minded jazz fan, the new experience will no doubt satisfy.

Gianluigi Trovesi & Gianni Coscia ::: In cerca di cibo

ECM debut for an enormously appealing duo that plays Italian roots music. Jazz is one component, but North Italian folk traditions predominate, alongside music of the classical tradition, film and theatre music, hints of mazurka, tango, klezmer and more. The music Trovesi and Coscia celebrate on "In cerca di cibo" --it means "in search of nourishment" - is deeply and touchingly nostalgic. It is music that is, by turns yearning, mournful, humourous, joyous, poetic, and sentimental. N.B: Liner notes for this release are by Umberto Eco

Enzo Favata ::: Atlantico

subtitled The return of migrant music between Sardinia and South America
Yes I have seen South America
...Many times, but through the eyes and the pen of writers that today I read and love greatly
I have gone on voyages together with Chatwin, Borges, passing onto Sepúlveda, Coloane and Garcia Marquez, on a motorbike with Che, sailing together with Melville, smiling with Soriano.
From the vision of these places which I have more than once visited and dreamed of through the writing of others, comes this new story , told in sound.
A story of far-off lands, the land of the milonga, of the candombe, and Andean music, of the tango, lands of nostalgia, lands where the earth ends.
Thousands of kilometres of water divide these worlds from my island, the immense waters of the sea and the ocean the Atlantic.

Ernst Reijseger & Tenore e concordu de Orosei ::: Colla Voche

Courtesy of grasprelease at SFRP forum - Classic, Jazz, World who in turn had it from an unknown uploader. Thanks to both of them
I love this record! I own it, but it was either lost in one of my many moves lately, or buried in storage. A kind soul came through for me and this rip includes almost flawless scans of the lovely booklet as well...what a gift! Reijseger is a madcap Dutchman cellist, a free-improvisor and risk-taker and re-searcher, a member of the wonderful jazz trio Clusone 3 (with Han Bennink and reedist Michael Moore, look for their SOFT LIGHTS AND SWEET MUSIC soon in the HatArt thread). Here he performs with frequent collaborator, Scottish percussionist Alan Purves, and the wondrous Sardinian male a capella group Tenore E Concordu De Orosei, who conjure some of the sweetest grating harmonies I've heard...if anything, Ernst is along for the ride, as adornment to an already-perfect form-of-life...but that really doesn't detract at all from how magical it is, and how perfect for the season. I think this is wonderful stuff...I'm very happy to have it again. Please do pass it on if you like it
